The Menomonie Tinman Triathlon will not return in 2007, nor for the foreseeable future. My thanks goes out to a great many people and organizations that has helped us over the past 26 events. We have held a fun, challenging event that has raised funds for some important causes. But, the participation levels have dropped to its point where we can no longer continue. As to why, the short answer is the lake.

Participants had nothing but praise for the course, the volunteers, and the area. They routinely extolled the virtues of our most challenging course in the scenic hillsides. They also said, "I can't come back and swim in that lake."

The lake has deteriorated to a point where we had almost no repeat participants the last few years we held our fall date. With this continued drop-off in participation, we tried shifting to a June date. In the hopes of gathering more participants with better water conditions, we picked the second week of June before the lake got a chance to turn green and smell terrible.

A June date brought additional challenges. Our course is more difficult than most. Earlier in the year may not have allowed enough time for participants to reach the appropriate fitness level. There's also much more competition on the calendar. There are eight triathlons within a four-hour drive of Menomonie the second weekend in June. It is no better the weekend before or the weekend after. There simply are too few participants to draw from.

Again, I offer my thanks to all the volunteers and companies that have donated so much over the years. The Tinman helped put Menomonie on the map and supported many worthy charitable causes.
